Here's a question to get you started:

What is one system that has not worked well for you in managing diverse types and sources of data? Why?

Treemap for exploration of spending

idea

What is the idea?

Treemaps offer a unique visualization for showing a comprehensive view of the Recovery spending while allowing for drill-down into the details. Here is an example that shows the Stimulus Bill composition alongside popularity of the components: http://stimulusbill.juiceanalytics.com/treemap

If this model was combined with views by agency and % disbursed, it could provide average visitors a way to navigate through all this data.

Why is it important?

It is hard to get a full picture of the Recovery spending. Treemaps offer a perfect tool for sharing the breadth and depth of this data.

Treemaps are great technology.

So, how does anyone know what the data means when it is shown using the Treemap technology?

If you don't have the semantics of the information being reported, then you'd not have designed the database properly, meaning that the reports shown by the treemap would be useless.

To get the semantics so there is shared meaning and awareness, built a terminology for the domain (i.e., ARRA).
